Gewürztraminer offers a delightful array of fruit-forward notes, including lychee, marmalade, passion fruit, roses, and grapefruit pith. Its intense fragrance often leads to the misconception that it is a sweet wine; however, it is typically off-dry, with some of the finest examples being distinctly dry. Gewürztraminer is not an entirely unique grape but rather an aromatic clone of Savagnin, also known as Traminer, specifically the Savagnin Rosé variety. The name Traminer is derived from the village of Tramin, located in a German-speaking area of northern Italy, while “Gewürz” translates to spice, aptly describing the grape's potent bouquet.
In California, Gewürztraminer has a modest presence, with less than 2,000 acres dedicated to its cultivation. Its survival in the Golden State is primarily thanks to a dedicated group of passionate winemakers. This grape thrives best in cooler climates, particularly in regions such as northern Monterey, Sonoma, and Anderson Valley. California Gewürztraminer often follows the Alsace style, made either dry or off-dry, with some of the top examples showcasing less than 1% residual sugar.
